What it's like
The Cynical Developer is the desktop pal for James Studdart’s podcast of the same name. He’s been doing this for twenty years, he’s seen things, and he’d like to lower your expectations – politely, every minute or two, from the bottom of your screen.
He has a lot more going on than the paperclip ever did: he checks his phone (and doesn’t like what he sees), puts his headphones on, goes on air, rants, panics, facepalms, shrugs, laughs at your commit messages and, after lunch, nods off.

Light and dark mode follow your computer, or pick one from the Appearance menu. The speech bubble changes colour to match.
Things The Cynical Developer says
A few of the real lines, word for word. The Cynical Developer pipes up every minute or two; every tip gets an airing before any repeats.
Mic’s on, sunglasses are on, optimism is off. I’m The Cynical Developer. Ready to hear how it’s really going to go?
It looks like you’re deploying on a Friday. Would you like me to pre-book your weekend for you?
I noticed the stand-up has run for twenty-two minutes. Nobody’s stood up in nineteen of them.
It looks like you’ve estimated this at two days. Shall I add the multiplier for ‘stakeholder involvement’?
I noticed this function is called doStuff. Bold. Honest. Useless to anyone in six months.
Done. I’ve added it to the ‘won’t fix’ column. It’s the busiest column we have.
Fresh off the mic: “…”. Would you like me to open it? I’ve heard it. I was there.
From the back catalogue: “…”. Still true. Sadly. Shall I open it?
Moves & moods
Drawn by the real pal – these are straight out of the app. Here's what each one is and when it happens.

Standing about
Weight shifting, glancing about, waiting to be disappointed.

Walking
Strolls the screen – mostly the bottom, sometimes off exploring.

Talking
Lip-synced mouth shapes while the words type out.

On air
Pulls up the boom mic. Sometimes while talking, and on a timer every 45 minutes or so.

Headphones on
Now and then while idle, and every 20 minutes or so.

Checking his phone
While he's standing about.

Phone: good news
Every day at 12:30. It's lunch.

Phone: bad news
Every day at 9:05. The emails have arrived.

Rant
When poked, when dropped, or just because.

Panic
When you pick him up, and when you try to close him.

Mocking laugh
At your code, while idle or mid-sentence.

Facepalm
When poked, or when it all gets too much.

Shrug
“It depends.” While talking or idle.

Raised eyebrow
Over the sunglasses. When poked or mid-sentence.

Foot tap
Every day at 16:55. Nearly home time.

Sleepy
At 15:00 every day, after lunch, and late at night.

Wave
When he starts up, and when you decide to keep him.

Poked
The usual reaction to a click.

Dropped
Lands after you drag him somewhere – sometimes followed by a rant.

Sad
When you try to close him.

Side view
Turns to face the way he's walking.

From behind
Off up the screen.
He doesn't make any sounds – everything he says is in the speech bubble.
Poke it, drag it, try to close it
Poke him
Click him and he reacts – usually a flinch, sometimes a raised eyebrow, a facepalm or a rant – then says something. Four quick clicks and he's had enough.
Stop poking me. I’m rate limiting you now. 429 Too Many Pokes.
Poke me once more and I’m opening a P1.
Pick him up and drop him
Drag him anywhere. Half the time he panics on the way up; he lands with a thump, and sometimes a rant.
Oi. I didn’t consent to a migration.
Lovely. Hot-desking. Just what I wanted.
Tell him to be quiet
“Quiet for 30 minutes” and he'll keep it to himself for half an hour.
Thirty minutes of silence. Like a stand-up where everyone’s actually working.
Try to close him
⌘Q, Alt+F4, the ×, the menu – all bring up the plea: he slides in from the edge of the screen, panics, and asks if you're sure. “Yes, close The Cynical Developer” closes him.
Hang on, you’re shutting me down? Are you sure? Who’s going to tell you not to deploy on a Friday? Your manager? Ha.
Off air. Go and touch some grass. Not the Kubernetes kind. 👋

The “are you sure?” plea
It's the most 2003 thing about the pals, and our favourite. Quit from the menu bar or tray, press ⌘Q or AltF4, click the × that appears when you hover over him – whatever you do, The Cynical Developer slides in from the side of the screen and asks you to reconsider.
It's a joke, not a trap. The close button is right there, and it works first time. Pressing Esc or the keep button means “fine, stay”. And if your computer is shutting down or logging out, there's no plea at all – it gets out of the way.
What The Cynical Developer connects to
One thing: The Cynical Developer podcast's public episode feed
- Addresses
- https://cynicaldeveloper.com/feed/podcast/ – the podcast's public RSS feed
- When
- About 15 seconds after he starts, then once an hour.
- Sends
- A normal web request for that public feed, like any podcast app. No account, no ID, nothing about you or your computer. Its only label says “PalStudio/1.0 (+feed reader)”.
- Why
- So he can tell you when a new episode is out (the very first time, only the latest episode, and only if it is under three weeks old; after that, anything he hasn't seen before), and now and then bring up an older one.
- Turn it off
- Untick “Check for new episodes & posts” in his menu and it stops. Offline? He stays quiet and tries again later.
- Links
- He only opens a web page when you click “Yes” on an episode – and only links that came from that feed – in your normal browser.
That's the whole list. No analytics, no telemetry, no update checks, no ads. More on the Safe & honest page.
